Job Summary
As a Building Performance Consultant at Clearbrook, you will be part of a collaborative, mission-driven team dedicated to optimizing building performance and sustainability. In this role, you will assist in delivering innovative simulation based insights - covering energy modeling, daylighting, CFD, and more - to inform design decisions and ensure compliance on projects. Working under the guidance of the Principal, you will contribute to analyses that drive energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and compliance. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on diverse, high-impact building projects using state-of-the-art tools, with strong mentorship and growth potential for an early-career professional.
Key Responsibilities
· Energy Modeling: Develop and run detailed building energy simulation models to evaluate design options and support energy efficiency initiatives.
· Daylight & CFD Analysis: Conduct daylighting simulations to assess natural light performance and assist in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies of airflow/thermal for specialized cases (for example, data center external site entrainment and internal data hall cooling strategies).
· Energy Code Compliance: Support energy codes and standards consulting by analyzing designs against relevant codes and standards (ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, CA Title 24, etc.) and preparing compliance documentation/reports.
· HVAC & Renewable Systems: Contribute to HVAC and renewable energy system analysis, modeling different system options and providing data-driven recommendations that balance energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
· Reporting & Documentation: Prepare clear, well-documented technical reports and presentations to communicate analytic results and recommendations to clients and design teams.
· Team Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary project teams (architects, MEP engineers, project managers) to integrate performance analysis findings into design solutions and project plans.
· Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with the latest building performance simulation tools, research, and code developments. Contribute to internal R&D efforts and knowledge-sharing initiatives to advance Clearbrook’s analytical capabilities.
Required Qualifications
· Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture (Building Science focus), or a related field.
· Experience: 2+ years of experience (excluding internships or academic projects) in building performance analysis, energy modeling, or a similar domain.
· Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with building energy modeling concepts and software tools (e.g. IES VE, DesignBuilder, EnergyPlus, or OpenStudio). Basic understanding of building HVAC systems, envelope design, and energy efficiency strategies.
· Energy Codes: Knowledge of or exposure to energy codes and standards (such as ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC) with a willingness to learn in-depth code compliance methods.
· Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with capacity to interpret simulation data and derive actionable insights.
· Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain complex technical concepts in clear terms for clients and non-technical stakeholders, and to produce well-structured reports.
· Organization: Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines in a consulting environment.
· Passion: Demonstrated enthusiasm for sustainable building design, energy efficiency, and continuous learning in the building science field.
Preferred Qualifications
· Advanced Degree: Master’s degree in High-Performance Building Design, Building Science, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainability, or a related field.
· Simulation Tools: Experience with parametric and early-stage modeling tools, especially the Ladybug and Honeybee suite for environmental analysis (daylighting, climate studies).
· CFD Experience: Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics tools or methods for building airflow and thermal simulations.
· Additional Domains: Exposure to energy auditing, retro-commissioning, or life-cycle assessment (WBLCA) methodologies and tools is a plus.
· Certifications: Relevant industry certifications or credentials such as LEED Green Associate/AP, EIT/FE, or CEM are advantageous.
· Industry Involvement: Active interest or participation in professional organizations (e.g. IBPSA-USA, ASHRAE) or contribution to research publications/blogs on building performance topics is a bonus.
